Spring is a time when new life begins – animals are born, the trees and flowers begin to bloom and the weather changes, leading to longer, brighter days. It is at this stage that we get to have more fun with our clothes after layering up and keeping warm over winter.
This makes the runways that show off the latest spring fashion trends some of the most exciting throughout the whole year. Spring will be around the corner before you know it, so let’s take a look at some of our favourite spring fashion trends for 2023:
A fun and flirty silhouette that has been introduced to our runways this season after a long absence is the bubble hem. Bubble hems follow an A-line shape, with the material at the bottom of the skirt or dress being pulled inwards so that the material curves under itself. Bubble hems can appear on a number of different items of clothing – from mini dresses to maxi dresses, skirts and even at the bottom of flared trousers. The playful design can be worn in a number of different shades – from subtle neutral tones to bright, eye-catching pops of colour for that extra bit of drama.
Pockets are the detail that has been on lots of different clothing items on the 2023 runway. From pocket-covered jackets to dresses with pockets, this functional design is set to become even more popular in the spring season. One of our favourite clothing pieces that include lots of pockets is cargo pants. Baggy cargo pants have risen in popularity over the last year and this trend is set to continue in springtime. Think military-style cargo pants designs with functional pockets in a range of neutral tones that can match any outfit. Pair these with trainers for a more casual look or a pair of nude heels and a smart top for a great nighttime look that has a quirky edge to it. What more could a girl want than pockets?!
Metallic shades such as gold and rose gold were commonly seen on the runway throughout 2022. While these metallic tones are set to continue, one shade is due to make a brilliant comeback – a stunning cool-toned silver. Silver has a more subtle look than its gold counterparts, but is still a shade that catches the eye and sets off an outfit.
Wearing silver in the springtime adds some brightness to your look. Pair the tone with basic pieces in the daytime for a paired-down look such as black or grey tank tops or bottoms or choose to pair with bright, pop-of-colour tones for a bold and glamorous evening look. One shade that has been all over the 2023 runway and pairs perfectly with a silver metallic is a bright Cobalt blue.
One of the most popular trends on the runway this year has been sheer materials, that show off the body of the wearer underneath. This has already been a popular trend worn by celebrities on the red carpet – from Florence Pugh to Rihanna. Sheer pieces can be worn by themselves over lacy underwear for a risqué look, or layered over basic clothing items for a layered, yet fashion-forward style. Choose pieces made from materials such as mesh or thin and floaty tulle to capture this look. Sheer handbags are a great way to use this look if you aren’t confident enough to brace a full sheer outfit – bags made from sheer material or clear Perspex were hot on the runway this season.
A trend that was popular in 2022 and is set to get even bigger throughout the spring of 2023 is the sports luxe trend. Think of combining classic workout gear, but adding a sophisticated edge to it, meaning that you can wear it anywhere – what’s not to love?!
The key to getting that luxury sportswear feel is to combine the items in the list above with classier, more professional pieces. For example, take a basic pair of cycling shorts and pair these with a sports bra, longline tailored blazer, and heels to elevate the outfit.
Our favourite accessory from the 2023 summer runway was beautiful, ornate party handbags that would have you standing out from the crowd. These bags, frequently covered in bedding and sequins truly are the start of the show in your outfit and can turn a classic, understated outfit into a more show-stopping piece. With party bags this season, the more ornate design the better for a show-stopping look.
And finally, a spring fashion list could not be complete without florals. While florals are usually a popular spring trend, in 2023 florals are coming back bigger and better. Think bold, bright floral prints on a large scale rather than delicate flowers. Large and in-your-face florals were seen bursting onto the runway at London Fashion week in bright pink, purple and vibrant orange shades and garments with these prints make a great statement piece for any spring wardrobe. One of the best options for floral prints is some beautiful floral dresses that you can wear right through the spring and summer seasons.
Statement pieces are great as you only have to buy a few pieces to show that you are up to date with fashion trends. Try to choose pieces such as accessories, jackets or a versatile skirt that work well with several different basics as this gives you a number of different outfits with one purchase.
Pops of colour are popular for spring 2023 – with bright yellows, greens and cobalt blues gaining popularity on the runway. If more subtle shades are more your thing, light pink has also become popular – think of the same shade as ballet slippers.
