Visit The Botanical Gardens in Gothenburg

For anyone who have not visit the Botanical Garden in Gothenburg, I strongly recommend it. It is a liberating green oasis for an otherwise stressed-out city crowd. The garden is also so large that it takes at least a day to walk through the entire park. We advise you to especially visit the park in autumn when the dahlias are in bloom. They form an incomparably beautiful colorful walkway through which you can wander and photograph these blooming beauties endlessly.

The Botanical Garden in Gothenburg has existed since the beginning of the 20th century, so it is an old park. Gothenburg’s botanical garden began to be planned/laid out in 1916 and opened in 1923 in connection with the Gothenburg Exhibition. Today, Botaniska is owned by the Västra Götaland region and offers residents a beautiful restful place for recreation and beauty experiences. Botaniska organizes a large number of exhibitions every year where you can experience exotic fruits, cocoa and tea varieties. Every autumn, the fruit and mushroom exhibitions attract a lot of people and are well worth a visit.

Facts Botanical Garden Gothenburg

The botanical garden in Gothenburg has approx. 16,000 plant varieties and is over 430 hectares. This makes this city garden one of Europe’s largest and foremost botanical gardens. The garden was laid out in 1923 (the same decade that Liseberg was built) This green oasis is not only intended as a botanical garden, but is also designed as a recreation area for Gothenburg’s residents and visiting tourists.

In the garden you can find, among other things, an award-winning rock garden, Sweden’s largest collection of tropical orchids and the famous Sophora Toromiro tree. There are several large beehives at the entrance and an exhibition hive in Örtagården. Botaniska’s shop sells their own honey, as well as greenery and details. The garden is always worth a visit but is at its most beautiful in spring when the bulbs are in bloom and late summer/early autumn when all the flowers are in full bloom. Make sure you take a whole day if you’ve never visited Botaniska Gothenburg, because it’s so much nice to look at.

Spring in the Gothenburg Botanical Garden

It blooms in every tree, a stunning sight of pink cherry blossoms and mighty rhododendron bushes. In the forest, white sedges are in full bloom and dance around the trees like little girls in white dresses.

Everything is completed by the serenade of our birds in the trees and bushes. In Gothenburg’s Botanical Garden in the spring, the stunning beauty of nature makes me so enthralled that I find it hard to describe in words :) We also took some pictures in the Castle Forest, I live nearby and I’m incredibly happy about that.

Try out meditation in the Botanical Garden

If you want to try meditating in Botaniska in Gothenburg, I have a great tip here. I volunteer at Hjärtjuvel Buddhist center here in Gothenburg. And then I realized that why not start having outdoor meditations and hikes in the summer? So we have started to have outdoor meditation in both Botaniska in Gothenburg and at the beautiful Delsjön lie outside the center of Gothenburg.

The outdoor meditations take place so that everyone who wants to join can be seen at the entrance to Botaniska. From there we then hike to the Japanese Cherry Valley. And there we have a nice clearing where we sit and meditate outside. The nun Jema Kelsang from Hjärtjuvel center leads the outdoor meditations and she is a lovely open person everyone likes. RECOMMENDED! hope to see you there :)

Autumn in Botanical Gothenburg

Autumn in Botaniska GBG can be summed up in one word “Dahlia” Because nothing beats the dazzling beauty of blooming dahlias in early autumn. Visitors and tourists come from many countries and take photos of the Dahlias. This is something you only have to see at least once in your life. So head to Botaniska in Gothenburg sometime around late August, when the dahlias are in full bloom. Nothing is more Instagram-friendly to photograph than them.

Gothenburg’s botanical garden – history and more facts

Gothenburg’s botanical garden was inaugurated in 1923, and at the same time the other landmarks of Gothenburg, such as Liseberg, the Art Museum and Gothenburg’s Natural History Museum, were also opened. Carl Skottsberg is the name of the man who got the solid job of building the Botanical Garden.

Basic tasks for the garden have been education and scientific research since the beginning. As a public park, horticulture and recreation have also been important components of the work. Since 1936, the Botanical Garden has had an active collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and serves as its excursion and research garden.

The garden has its own pedagogue who receives approx. 10,000 students per year from schools in the region. Since 2006, Gröna Rehab, rehabilitation of people with stress-related illnesses, has been added as another important activity. The garden has an extensive annual program with displays of the different parts of the garden, exhibitions in botany and art, activities for children and various cultural events.

Enjoy the rest of your week! :)
