Portugal is best known for its beaches and for being the hottest country in all of Europe. Apart from the amazing seaside, the country is filled with historic landmarks that are a must visit. In this post I will highlight the most interesting castles and historic estates to visit when you are in Portugal.
Castelo dos Mouros
Located in Sintra, Castelo dos Mouros dates back to the VIII century and is one of Sintra´s main historic attractions. The Castle was held by the Moors until 1147 when the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques I conquered it. Besides the massive wall the Castle has a chapel and multiple towers that present its visitors with amazing panoramic views over Sintra.
Palácio da Pena
The castle Palácio da Pena is one of Portugal´s main landmarks , it has nearly 500000 visitors yearly. It was constructed in the early 1900´s by the king D. Fernando II, and the revivalist architecture is present in many details around this beautiful building. Not only does it offer amazing landscapes, but the architecture and the interior decor of the rooms make this a must visit place in Portugal.
Quinta da Regaleira
The construction of this historical site dates back to the late 17th century. It is located in the historical center of Sintra and it is famous for its gothic architecture. It is comprised of a chapel, a network tunnels connecting different areas of the property, and a well that stretches for 27 meters along which you have a spiral stairway.
Initiation Well – Quinta da Regaleira
The well was used by the Freemasonry and the Knights templars for initiation rituals. Upon visiting the site, I can say it is filled with mysticism and a dark atmosphere surrounding it, reminding me of Horror Movies. If you want to read some more about this exciting place you can do that HERE
Castelo S. Jorge
Located in the heart of Lisbon, Castelo de S. Jorge dates back to the first century B.C. and it was named after S. Jorge the saint for the crusaders. The castle stands as a must visit in the portuguese capital, visitors can expect incredible views over the city and of the river Tejo.
Of all this exciting historical landmarks you can visit while in Portugal, my personal favorite is Palácio da Pena. The architecture and the interior decor of this 19th century iconic building, makes it stand out among many others. Many of this historical buildings make the visitors almost feel they are in Game of Thrones. So the next time you visit Portugal, you should not miss these amazing fairytale castles.
